Wicked Is The Tenth Longest-Running West End Show

Author KevinKevin, April 29th, 2024

Popular, Wicked Is Popular!

Popular, Wicked is popular! On 24 April, the modern classic (which continues its open-ended run at the Apollo Victoria Theatre) played its 6762nd performance overtaking No Sex Please, We're British, which ran from June 1971 until September 1987, playing a total of 6,761 performances.

A WICKED HISTORY

Wicked now joins West End veterans such as The Mousetrap, Les Misrables, The Phantom of the Opera, The Woman in Black, Blood Brothers, and Mamma Mia!. The show had its humble beginnings when it first premiered on Broadway in 2003 before making its way across the Atlantic to the West End in 2006. The musical, based on Gregory Maguire's novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West," has shown us a whole other side to the wonderful world of Oz and has left us wanting more ever since.

The show offers a fresh perspective on the classic tale that we (and our grandparents) have adored since childhood. In Wicked, we are introduced to an unlikely but powerful friendship between Elphaba, the green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, the popular and bubbly Good Witch of the North. Over the years, the show has become a cultural phenomenon. Its success can be attributed to its exhilarating story craft, its timeless music by Stephen Schwartz, and its intricate sets and costumes.

You can currently catch Alexia Khadime as Elphaba, Lucy St. Louis as Glinda, and Ryan Reid as Fiyero in the West End production, ahead of the new film this autumn. Here's to many more years of Wicked!
